Television generally provides content in quantity rather than quality. But lucky for horror fans this isn’t always true. There have been lots of scary TV movies that rival the latest big budget horrors on the big screen. You’re probably already familiar with the more famous of these.
Today we’ll take a look at two titles you may have missed.

“The Stone Tape” 1972 tells the story of a team of British recording technicians working in an old Victorian house and attempting to find a new way to record data. While there they witness an apparently supernatural sequence of events that is unique in that it repeatedly appears in the same place at regular intervals.
This is a creepy and scary movie that holds its own when compared to many big budget ghost story films. The cast is fantastic, the script is spare and to the point, the overall production is straight-up TV production, but that works beautifully for this particular movie.
This is TV Terror done so, so wonderfully.

“The Woman in Black” 1989 tells the story of a young British solicitor tasked with settling the estate of an unpopular rich lady.
This is, perhaps, the scariest ghost story I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a lot of ghost stories, as supernatural horror is my favorite flavor. This one takes a very simple setting and turns it into refined titanic terror. This is a beautifully made film with the terror nicely confined to the TV frame. The imagery, the sound, and the music perfectly creates the foundation for a terrifying journey.
Next up in this series is a brief look at the various TV versions of Frankenstein.
See you then
